cash in earlier than ever. open thanksgiving night. already we've seen some long lines and short tempers. tahman bradley is here with the latest. live in the flesh. good morning, sir. >> reporter: good morning, rob. good morning, brandi. good to be with you. and happy black friday. black friday, the unofficial start of the crucial holiday gift-buying season. this morning, lines are already long at stores across the country, as people looking for deal storm the barricades. shoppers rush stores overnight, filling carts with black friday bargains. best buy opened its store doors at midnight. but that's already hours after deals were being snapped up for thanksgiving. retailers are trying to get an edge on the $52 billion up for grabs this year. they say every day counts. that's why toys "r" us, sears, walmart and target offered door-busting deals a day early. >> it's an arms race. then, 8:00. 7:00, 6:00. 4:00 in the morning and then

midnight. >> reporter: shoppers filled their carts with toys and rushed for flat-screen tvs. this woman bought four of them. >> saved $616. >> reporter: across the country, lines were long. and not everyone was in the holiday spirit. >> push and i'll stab one of you. >> reporter: tempers flared at this kmart when the plasma tvs started running out. >> everybody went crazy about it. cops got called in. and it became a mad house. >> reporter: but tempers flaring at this time of year is nothing new. connecticut police tasered this man after resisting arrest. and this is a fight that broke out at h&m in culver city, california. police are using new tools to keep shoppers safe. the los angeles police department is putting hundreds of extra officers on foot, horseback and in the air to monitor crowds while stores move merchandise around to ease congestion. and some workers are upset about stores opening earlier each year. walmart employees in kenosha,

wisconsin, and other parts of the country picketing. 147 million people are expected to shop this holiday weekend. only the beginning of the national holiday shopping spree. brandi and rob? >> here's my big question. did you go out there and started shopping yourself? i don't see gifts you brought us. >> reporter: i don't have gifts. i was eating turkey. i was having a normal thanksgiving. but gad bless those people who stood in the lines. i don't like electronics. i do have to get gifts for friends and family and, of course, for you guys. >> thank you. >> reporter: i can do that december 24th. that's what i do every year. >> i'll be in line with you. >> free for not being out there. >> no one roughs you up. stay safe. >> thanks. >> good to have you in the flesh, my friend. >> thank you. well, in other news this morning, traffic is moving this morning on an busy stretch of interstate 10 near beaumont, texas. it was closed down for hours yesterday after thick fog caused a deadly chain-reaction.

involving more than 100 vehicles. >> and the holiday was especially painful for the two people killed. a married couple whose suv was hit by an 18-wheeler. ryan owens has the details. >> reporter: from the air, the crush of cars and trucks almost look like toys. from the ground, the reality is devastating. as many as 150 vehicles piled together. two died in this mangled metal. up to 100 others in the hospital. >> i literally was able to stop without hitting anyone. but sat there with that panic of who might hit me. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: fog blinded drivers on this stretch of texas highway. investigators say most couldn't see a foot in front of them. it happened on interstate 10, about 80 miles east of houston. i-10 runs from florida to california. both sides were shut down for hours. tens of thousands hoping to get to their thanksgiving meal were stranded. >> the cause of the accident was a heavy fog bankrolled into this

area. no one able to see. and one accident triggered another, and a chain reaction. >> reporter: fog-related collisions are among the deadliest. earlier this year, 20 died on a florida highway, enveloped in a choking mix of fog and smoke from a brush fire. this 5-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when a semi slammed into his mother's suv. its other precious cargo, the thanksgiving turkey. little damian ortiz used it to make sandwiches for the other injured. a roadside meal for those truly thankful, just to be alive. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> tough scene there. and another thanksgiving day tragedy has left one woman dead. this time, in pompano beach, florida. a dive boat carrying 23 people capsized and broke apart after it was hit by an enormous wave. everyone onboard was tossed into the water. overseas, now. the cease-fire in the middle east appears to be holding.

there's signs of life returning to normal, as israel and palestinian militants in gaza seem to be respecting the truce, forged after eight days of rocket fire. 160 people dead. israel said it arrested a member of hamas for wednesday's bus bombing in tel aviv that injured 27 people. egypt's president has made a bold political move, fresh off his key role in negotiates that cease-fire. mohamed morsi has granted himself broad-new hours. courts cannot challenge his positions. it sets the stage for the retrial of former president hosni mubarak. back here at home, a terrifying thanksgiving for a new hampshire couple. after curiosity got the best of their 2-year-old son. little cayden ledger opened a laundry chute on the second floor of his family's home. and he slid all the way down to the basement and got stuck inside the wall. his frantic parents could hear

in san francisco. and if it's successful, it will expand to other major cities next year. your mail carrier also won't be delivering as many of those catalogs this holiday season. companies that used to sound out mountains of catalogs are being stung by higher postage costs and the weak economy. a third fewer catalogs are being mailed out compared to just four years ago. but still, about 12 billion a year will be going out. >> less junk mail could be a good thing, actually. as shoppers head out this weekend, we're learning the mannequins you see may not be your average dummy. some mannequins, in fact, will be watching you. that's because they're equipped with a tiny camera that's embedded in their eye. they can actually collect information about shoppers' habits. but also, scope out shoplifters by spying on customers right there at eye level. the italian company that makes them is now working on technology that enables them to eavesdrop, as well. >> you're going to see a lot of people walking up to mannequins

to new york. five different shoots in front of a high-tech screen, shot in just the last month. behind-the-scenes footage, of dwight howard playing around, for his part that would be inserted later. the producers had a half an hour with each player, putting someone beside them to give them a sense of what they had to accomplish on the court. how did that do it to time? they followed a color-coded monitor, much like the video game, guitar hero, that lights up on the right or left, so they know which side to dribble on and when. howard and the four others digitally laid in right next to each other and this was the result.
